The Christian Poet

Raymond Sutherland

About this Christian Poet:
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, I left school and served my apprenticeship to become a Spinner in a woollen textile mill. I worked there for twelve years. In desperation to get out of the mill, I joined Aberdeen Police Force, and was a PC for 14 years—a long time ago. We then had a small and not too successful picture framing business. Finally I worked with Shell until my retirement. Kath and I have been married for forty years and we have three daughters and four grandchildren.

I love to write poetry but often have to wait for the Holy Spirit to give me the unction as it were. My hope is that the poems will glorify Jesus. I have found that it doesn't really matter so much what you do, rather it is a case of surrender to Jesus. Only if we surrender will we have the victory.

From the land of the near aware to the land of the far unseen

In the land of the near aware
Where the present presses in
There is no feel for what's right or real
No consciousness of sin.
A man is judged by his bankbook
A lady by looks or dress
Go with the flow
Keep in the know
Know which knuckle to press.
In the land of the near aware
We consider ourselves as sage
Cardboard men, cardboard lives
Dance on a cardboard stage.

In the land of the near aware
Heaven's voice is strangely stilled
Fighting the cause for the world's applause
Remaining unfulfilled.
In this nether-land of self
It's said that there's no God
With lofty voice men make their choice
Careering down Hell's Road.

Yet there is no need to stay
In the land of the near aware
For the land of the far unseen
Can be reached by just a prayer.
Amazing though it seems
Yes, it's just a prayerful stroll
To pass from death to life
To the uplands of the soul.
In the land of the near aware
It may seem but a distant dream
But Jesus has opened the door
To the land of the far unseen.

Travelling repentance road
Till the prayer-gate you pass through
In the land of the far beyond
Behold, all things are new!
In the presence of the King
A strange thing happens where
The land of the far beyond
Becomes the land of the near aware.
